Mesh for hiatal hernia repair and deployment device

Description:

Mesh and deployment system intended for the laparoscopic repair of hiatal hernias

Sanford Tech ID: 0018-01

Invention Summary

0018-01 is a device that enables hiatal hernias to be repaired with a laparoscopic approach. A mesh is placed along the hiatus to close it. Embedded within the mesh are tacks anchor it in place. The mesh and tacks are deployed with an actuating laparoscopic delivery system.

Value Proposition

•       Allows for minimally invasive hiatal hernia repair without the need to suture or use a separate tacking device

•       Creates ease of use for a technically demanding procedure

•       Decreases procedural time

Market Opportunity

Approximately 40,000 hiatal hernia procedures are performed per year. Given this procedure does not require a large capital purchase such as a surgical robot, this invention may allow new companies to enter the market and compete against robotics companies.

Intellectual Property

There is a granted U.S. patent and a pending PCT patent application.

Development Status

Prototypes have been created. The next step includes creating a clinically ready device.
